Focus: Recovery from winter + leak detection

  • Inspect pipes for leaks or cracks caused by freezing 
  • Turn on and test exterior hose bibs/spigots 
  • Check for damaged outdoor faucets (look for dripping inside when turned on) 
  • Inspect sump pump (pour water into pit to test operation) 
  • Check for basement or crawlspace moisture issues 
  • Clean showerheads and faucets (remove mineral buildup) 
  • Inspect washing machine hoses for cracks or bulging 
  • Check toilets for silent leaks (food coloring test) 
  • Schedule a general plumbing inspection if winter was harsh

Focus: High usage + outdoor water systems

  • Inspect garbage disposal and clean it (ice + vinegar or cleaner)

  • Look for signs of sewer line issues (slow drains, odors) 
  • Inspect exposed pipes for corrosion 
  • Ensure outdoor drainage is directing water away from the foundation

  • Shut off and drain exterior spigots 
  • Disconnect and store garden hoses 
  • Insulate exposed pipes (garage, crawlspace, exterior walls)

  • Inspect main water shut-off valve (make sure it works) 
  • Seal gaps around pipes entering the home 
  • Clean drains to prevent slowdowns during winter 
  • Test pressure relief valve on water heater

Focus: Freeze prevention + emergency readiness

  • Keep indoor temperature consistent (even when away) 
  • Open cabinet doors to allow warm air to reach pipes 
  • Let faucets drip during extreme cold 
  • Watch for signs of frozen pipes (reduced flow, frost on pipes) 
  • Know the location of your main water shut-off valve 
  • Keep snow cleared away from exterior vents and drains
