Water heater servicing

Why You Should Flush a Tankless Water Heater

1. Prevents scale buildup

  • Minerals (especially in hard water) collect inside the heat exchanger.
  • This buildup reduces efficiency and can clog internal components.

2. Maintains efficiency

  • A clean unit heats water faster and uses less energy.
  • Scale forces the system to work harder, increasing utility costs.

3. Extends lifespan

  • Regular flushing prevents internal damage.
  • Neglected units wear out much faster and can fail prematurely.

4. Ensures consistent hot water

  • Scale buildup can cause temperature fluctuations or reduced flow.
  • Flushing helps maintain steady performance.

5. Prevents costly repairs

  • Mineral deposits can damage sensors, valves, and heat exchangers.
  • Routine maintenance is far cheaper than major repairs.

6. Keeps warranty valid

  • Many manufacturers require annual maintenance.
  • Skipping flushing can void the warranty.

7. Improves water quality

  • Removes sediment and buildup that can affect taste or clarity.

How Often You Should Flush It

  • Once per year (standard recommendation)
    • Good for most households with average water conditions.
  • Every 6–9 months (hard water areas)
    • If you have high mineral content or no water softener.
  • Every 18–24 months (soft water or low usage)
    • Only if water quality is excellent and usage is light.

Signs It Needs Flushing Sooner

  • Reduced hot water flow
  • Inconsistent water temperature
  • Strange noises (rumbling or clicking)
  • Error codes on the unit
  • Longer time to heat water
