Irrigation sprinkler shutoff

Winter Irrigation Shut-Off: Why It Matters & What to Do

As temperatures drop, it’s critical to properly shut down your irrigation system before freezing weather arrives.

❄️ Why This Is Important

Water left in your sprinkler lines can freeze, expand, and crack pipes, valves, and sprinkler heads. This can lead to:

  • Costly repairs in the spring
  • Underground leaks you may not notice right away
  • Damage to your backflow preventer and main water line

A proper winterization protects your entire system and saves you money long-term.

🔧 What Needs to Be Done

Winterizing an irrigation system involves:

  • Turning off the water supply to the system
  • Draining all remaining water from pipes and valves
  • Using compressed air to “blow out” any leftover water (the most important step)
  • Shutting down and securing the backflow preventer

⚠️ Why You Should Hire a Professional

While it may seem simple, irrigation blowouts require specialized equipment and experience. Using the wrong air pressure or method can:

  • Damage pipes or fittings
  • Ruin sprinkler heads
  • Void equipment warranties

A professional ensures:

  • The system is fully cleared of water
  • Proper pressure is used
  • All components are safely shut down
